The Playground

The Playground is my take on a pavilion for the students of Iowa State University. It draws inspiration from the simple forms of children’s blocks, translating their shapes into a life-size array of options for lounging, socializing, and play. The project required site, client, and material research, looking at precedent studies of actual playgrounds, as well as other pavilion spaces. The process involved lots of sketching, conceptual model making, and finally laser cutting colorful acrylic to create the final scale model. Tapping into my own childlike imagination to create it, this installation is to act as a playground for the mind, inviting all to play pretend.
